$2000 car rebate

It will be easier for people in Greenway to get rid of old polluting cars with the introduction of a $2,000 Cleaner Car Rebate, according to the Minister for Climate Change, Energy Efficiency and Water Penny Wong and Labor Candidate for Greenway Michelle Rowland.

Motorists with old cars manufactured before 1995 will be eligible for the rebate when they purchase a new, fuel-efficient vehicle from January 1.

“Not only will the Cleaner Car Rebate help cut carbon emissions, it will also help reduce cost of living pressures. After all, a brand new fuel-efficient vehicle costs much less to run each week than a pre-1995 clunker.

“While the Gillard Labor Government is taking practical action on climate change, Tony Abbott doesn’t even believe it exists.

“This rebate will help make it more affordable for families to trade in their old gas guzzlers for new fuel-efficient cars.

“It’s a practical way for families in Greenway to help tackle climate change,” said Ms Rowland.

It is anticipated that the Cleaner Car Rebate will see close to 200,000 pre-1995 vehicles taken off the road over four years from 1 January 2011 to the end of 2014 generating the following benefits over a decade:

A reduction in carbon dioxide emissions of 1 million tonnes. A saving to motorists of $344 million in fuel costs.

“Some of the new cars eligible for the Cleaner Car Rebate are the Holden Cruze, Toyota Corolla and Hyundai Getz,” said Michelle Rowland.

Minister Wong and Michelle Rowland also welcomed grass roots initiatives while visiting the Grantham Poultry Research Station yesterday. This solar powered eco-friendly building acts as a Sustainability Education Centre for the Blacktown community.

“It was fantastic to be given the opportunity to visit the Grantham Poultry Research Station and view the community playing its role in environmental education. It is vital that we all embrace the need to live environmentally friendly and work together towards a better future.”
