 Audience left wondering

Audience left wondering

27 Jul, 2010 01:00 AM
THE Pavilion Theatre's latest production Doubt is one of those plays with the potential to generate discussion for weeks on end.

In the Pulitzer-prize winning play by John Patrick Shanley, Sister Aloysius of St Nicholas Elementary School suspects the nature of Father Flynn's relationship with one of his pupils.

And Father Flynn believes Sister Aloysius is out to destroy him because of his friendship with the boy.

In the Castle Hill Players version, Father Flynn monologues, instead of interacting with children on stage, not allowing the audience to see his rapport with them.

But veteran Paul Sztelma, who plays Father Flynn, has a strong stage presence and engrosses the audience.

After a slightly slow start stumbling on her words, actress Jennifer Leslie, as Sister Aloysius, went into a heated argument with Father Flynn without losing her cool.

With that scene she owns the stage and has the power to make you trust her heartfelt convictions.

Sister James is full of enthusiasm and believes in the good of people.

Actress Jessica Paterson oscillated between that joie de vivre, and the uncertainty of who to believe in, very well.

Much like director Peter Rhodes and actor Paul Sztelma's opinion after seeing the play for the first time, the audience was divided about Father Flynn's guilt or innocence.

Performances run until August 14 on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 8.15pm and Sundays at 4.30pm.Bookings: 96342929.
