DANIEL Kal (right), 13, of Castle Hill, will walk 100 kilometres to raise money for poor children and workers from Third World countries.
Daniel, who goes to William Clarke College, was doing a school project when he came across information that made him want people to know how harsh life is for children who work every day in the Ivory Coast cocoa industry.
Daniel said he learnt that 10,000 of them were virtual slaves who used machetes and worked with pesticides for sometimes less than $2 a day.
He approached several local cafes to ask them to offer products certified by the Fair Trade Association, which supports better working conditions for country farmers in nations in the Third World, but will use his fund-raiser walk to induce more people to help.
``I chose to walk in central NSW because I wanted the conditions of the walk to be as close as I could get to the people in those countries,'' Daniel said. ``I didn't want to just walk in suburban areas.''
All the money raised will be given to Compassion Australia, an organisation that is in partnership with local churches in developing countries and that gives resources to those in need.
