Acid spill in Castle Hill

01 Feb, 2012 12:36 PM
Parts of Terminus Street, Castle Hill was closed off after a hydrochloric acid spill today.

The chemical spill which spread across the intersections of Crane Road and Terminus Street was caused by two 5 litre bottles.

Castle Hill fire brigade and local police responded to the spill.

Fire and Rescue NSW station officer Brad Hojel told the News they had responded to the emergency call at 11am this morning.

“When we arrived both bottles were split, one was empty and the other was two-thirds full and it was letting off a gas,” Mr Hojel said.

Hydrochloric acid, a chemical used in pool cleaners can be harmful when inhaled in its gas form.

Sections of Terminus Street were closed and police were directing traffic away from the site.

Fire and Rescue NSW removed the bottles and covered the area with dry earth.

The bottles are believed to have fallen from a passing truck and were unnoticed by the driver.

A further hazard crew has been called to neutralise the area.
