WITH the 26th annual state Variety Bash just around the corner, two Box Hill residents are putting on the final touches to their ride.
Dominic and Kim Votano have been working hard for three months to make sure their 1967 ZA Fairlane stands out in style, when they drive nearly 4000 kilometres across the state to raise money for Variety, a children's charity supporting children who are sick, have special needs and are disadvantaged.
Joining other drivers passionate about the cause, the couple have painted their ride black to suit their mobster theme on the eight-day trip.
``We have competed in other motoring events but found that the Bash was a lot of fun and also raises money for a great cause that as parents, we relate to,'' Mr Votano said.
Having already competed in seven Variety Bashes between them, the couple have raised $188,000 so far for the children's charity and are well on their way to reaching their $20,000 goal this year.
Originating in 1985, the Bash was created when philanthropist Dick Smith decided to take a few mates for a drive in the outback using old cars, charging them to raise money for Variety.
With a tradition to start and finish from a destination starting with the letter b, this year drivers will depart from the B Shed at Sydney Markets on Sunday, August 22, and return to Byron Bay on Monday August 30.
To participate, drivers must donate $8500 to the Variety charity and pay for all their own expenses along the way, and they can only drive a car that is no more modern than a 1974 model.
