CASTLEBROOK Memorial Park could gain more than a hectare of interment space that would provide a buffer between the cemetery grounds and The Ponds estate.
Blacktown Council resolved on Wednesday to forward a proposal to the Minister for Planning to rezone the parcel of land — which is under contract for acquisition from Roads and Maritime Service (formerly the RTA) — from residential to special uses.
Castlebrook is owned by Invocare, which seeks a gateway determination to allow the rezoning.
Communications manager at Castlebrook Memorial Park, Karl Wolfenden, said the land was first acquired two years ago through a land swap with the RTA.
"In 2009 a land swap was organised between Castlebrook Memorial Park and the RTA," he said.
"They were after a small parcel of land that we had so that they could widen Schofields Road. In exchange for that they titled us with the area that is in the proposal."
Mr Wolfenden said the land would be used for either lawn burials or cremation gardens.
There would be no building on it, he said. It was to create some green space between the park and the residents of the estate across the road.
"We don't have a formal plan in place as yet, but if it is going to be for cremation gardens then obviously the number could be quite high, whereas if it were for lawn burials it wouldn't be anywhere near that number as they have different space requirements."
The land extends almost 360 metres from Schofields Road and borders part of the Memorial Park's western boundary.
The council suggested the rezoning would meet the demand for future cemetery space that is expected to rise with housing in the North West Growth Centre.
