Cafe's a welcome addition to area

24 Jan, 2012 01:00 AM
THE New Rouse Hill will take on a new flavour when Meze Me opens tomorrow at Mungerie House.

The cafe is owned by Kellyville Ridge residents Darren and Joanne Pettit, who have operated a catering business in the area for more than eight years.

It will source fresh produce locally, with fruit and vegetables from Rouse Hill Grower's Market and fish from a local fishmonger to create contemporary Australian food with a unique flavour.

"It's a unique style of food — a bit of Moroccan, Middle Eastern, French influence using different spices and ingredients," Mr Pettit said.

"All the staff have been trained at a Toby's Estate barista course which we thought was a very important thing.

"Keeping someone that knows what they're doing as a barista on the machine is imperative for good quality coffee and consistency."

Mr Pettit began his food career as an apprentice at Sydney's Ritz Carlton hotel before he opened the popular Kazbah restaurant on Darling Street in Balmain, and another in Ryde.

He said a passion for food and the sense of community at The New Rouse Hill were factors that attracted him to the cafe opportunity.

"We look forward to getting to know everyone from The New Rouse Hill area and doing what we love most," he said.

"Our aim is to provide a service that will make the area a bit more unique."

The pair is both excited and relieved to launch the cafe after months of planning, and have already began to get to know their customers.

"A lot of the locals have come and introduced themselves so that's been really good, " Mrs Pettit said.

"We've been able to start a relationship with them get to know their first names and how they like their coffee."

The New Rouse Hill project director, Ranisha Clarke, said the community was excited to welcome a cafe to the area.

"Darren and Joanne have a wonderful sense of family and community," Ms Clarke said.

"We look forward to seeing them bring people in the local area together through their love of food."

The cafe will be open Wednesday to Sunday until 10pm, with breakfast offered initially on the weekend only.

Details: Meze Me, Mungerie House, Bellcast Road, Rouse Hill, 8824 4999.
