TO many Sydneysiders, climbing the Harbour Bridge may be considered as something tourists do.
But after my recent BridgeClimb experience, I believe it is something that should be more appreciated by the locals.
Standing at the top of the ``coathanger'' not only reminded me of how beautiful our city is but how often we don't take the time to appreciate it.
Only last week, the descendants of the bridge's civil engineer Dr J.J.C. Bradfield celebrated the 80th anniversary of the day in 1930 when the two sides of the Harbour Bridge were joined, directly connecting Sydney's population of the south and the north for the first time.
I experienced my first BridgeClimb 10 years ago. I was so thrilled that I bought a ticket for my dad for Father's Day and he also thoroughly enjoyed it.
A lot has changed in 10 years: people now have a choice of three climbs: The Bridge Climb, The Discovery Climb and the newest, The Express Climb.
My dad and I did the three-hour Discovery Climb that heads for the top along the inner arch of the bridge, via the heart of the bridge.
Following extensive preparation, we were able to touch the bridge's raw steel and rivets.
We then wound our way above the harbour on catwalks, scaled the steel heart of the bridge and emerged on the top via a staircase between the bridge's two arches.
Along the way, while enjoying the stunning panoramic views, our leader Liam outlined the bridge's fascinating history.
I learned more about the bridge and Sydney's history than I ever did in the classroom.
The Bridge Climb is three hours and takes participants along the outer arch of the bridge on catwalks and ladders all the way to the summit. The Express Climb is the fastest way to the top, in just over two hours.
About 2.5 million people have climbed the bridge since it began in October 1998.
Anyone can also visit the fascinating visitors' centre to learn about the bridge's history.
Prices range from $198-$298 for day, night, twilight and exclusive dawn tours.
Each climb includes a personalised commemorative climber certificate and a group photograph.
