THE government may have ended its controversial home insulation scheme last Friday, but disposal of the old insulation is a continuing concern.
WSN Environmental Solutions which receives waste from Blacktown Council to its Eastern Creek waste facility noticed a significant increase in deliveries of fibreglass insulation at its Sydney network of sites as early as November last year.
A spokesman for the organisation said it ``cannot quantify the increase in insulation that is dropped off as it is coded in the system as a dusty waste, which includes other materials as well'' but cautioned residents to take care when disposing of old insulation that contains synthetic mineral fibres.
WSN Environmental Solutions CEO Ken Kanofski said the materials must be handled carefully to minimise the release of dust ``which may contain microscopic fibres and can result in health risks if accidentally inhaled or swallowed.''
Classed as a special waste, old ceiling insulation bats can only be accepted at nominated landfills, including the Eastern Creek site.
The waste must be wrapped securely in garbage bags or builders' plastic in a manageable size for unloading and sealed completely.
It must be booked into a WSN landfill at least one working day prior to disposal Details: 1300651116.
