GLENWOOD is set to have a wheelchair rugby league program.
The NSW Wheelchair Rugby League will get a $10,000 state-government grant to establish a program in Glenwood and other areas.
Riverstone MP John Aquilina said the program would promote the sport and facilitate scouting and developing new athletes and accreditation for officials and coaches.
``The team sport competition will include people with disabilities at every level of the sport including coaching, managing, marketing and development,'' he said.
Sport and Recreation Minister Kevin Greene said the Disability Sport Assistance Program enhanced opportunities for people with a disability in NSW to access local community sport and physical activity.
``It's so important to reduce barriers to participation for people with a disability,'' he said. ``This program helps individuals develop self-esteem, improve physical and mental health and bring down social barriers.''
Disability Services Minister Peter Primrose said the government had committed $1million to the program over four years. ``Supporting people with a disability is about more than just services, it's about being able to access the same activities as everyone else,'' he said. ``Sports are a key part of growing up for everyone and people with a disability are no exception.''
Mr Aquilina said 43 non-profit organisations would share almost $360,000 in NSW Government grants.
