IT'S official: Baulkham Hills High School is the most popular first choice for students seeking enrolment in a selective high school.
Data obtained under freedom of information laws by The Sydney Morning Herald revealed that of the state's 21 selective high schools, Baulkham Hills was the first choice of the majority of applicants for the past four years.
The school's principal, Jeanne Bathgate, said its location in a growth area was part of the reason for its popularity.
The intake into year 7 each year is about 180. Also we are a very large school with 1166 students, so people would probably think they have a good chance of getting in.
``This also allows us to run a broad curriculum with lots of course choices in the senior school, which appeals to people,'' Dr Bathgate said.
The junior school also offers electives like food technology and woodwork, which she describes as ``good wind-down classes''.
Dr Bathgate said the school was active in the community with a student-driven outreach program and participation in events such as Anzac Day.
While James Ruse Agricultural High School at Carlingford has headed the list of top Higher School Certificate performers for some 14 years, it was the fourth most popular choice last year and sixth the year before.
