WHEN the Red Cross Blood Service's Donormobile rolls into Castle Hill RSL Club this Friday it will have a special significance for the club's group marketing manager.
Melanie Morson has been a blood donor for seven years but recently her best friend's brother-in-law, Lyndon Tomlinson, was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia.
The triathlete had previously fought the condition and gone into remission in 2008 but is now in Royal Prince Alfred Hospital at Camperdown awaiting a bone-marrow transplant.
None of his three brothers are a match due to his rare tissue type.
Recently he and wife Natasha started a campaign with family and friends on Facebook to draw awareness to the Bone Marrow Donor Registry.
``There's a huge gap in the system in people being made aware of becoming a bone-marrow donor,'' Mr Tomlinson said.
Ms Morson said she would give blood and put her name on the bone-marrow registry for the first time next Monday, July5.
``Lyndon is just such an inspiration and I want to encourage all our staff and The Hills residents to consider giving blood and registering for the bone-marrow registry at the same time. To think that potentially you could be a match and save someone's life some day is very powerful.''
The Donormobile will be at the club on July2, 5 and 6.
Ms Morson said the club was committed to raising awareness of the Bone Marrow Donor Registry.
``The registry is a list of people who may be willing to donate bone marrow or stem cells to give a transplant patient a second chance at life.
``It's linked to a worldwide network of donor registries which can be searched for those patients.
``You can be part of the registry by letting the staff member taking your blood donation know that you would like to be put onto the Australian Bone Marrow Donor Registry. They will take some additional units of blood and send them off to be tested. The registry will contact you if you're found to be a match.''
Donors must be aged 18 to 40 at registration and in good health.
Club president and chairman Warren Glenny said: ``We're very pleased to get behind this.''
