 Pests' days are numbered

Pests' days are numbered

27 Jul, 2010 12:00 AM

A ROUSE Hill medical centre manager has come up with the perfect solution to banish microscopic allergens, by creating his own product to tackle hidden germs.

Ranjith Obeyesekera, who has a PhD in engineering and is manager of The Hills Doctors medical centre in Rouse Hill, recently launched the dust mite eliminator to fight the tiny bugs that thrive in carpets, pillows and mattresses.

After he saw his family and friends suffer from similar symptoms caused by dust mites including hay fever, itchiness and watery eyes, Mr Obeyesekera spent more than 12 months researching and developing the perfect product to kill them off.

``I started out by just testing live dust mites with vacuum cleaners to see if they were picked up,'' Mr Obeyesekera said.

``After I realised they were not sucked in, I pulled one of the vacuums apart to break down the elements inside.''

Discovering that they could only withstand a certain degree of frequency, Mr Obeyesekera designed a small lightweight object to transmit sonic waves to shake them up. Attached to the vacuum head with velcro, Mr Obeyesekera said once it was charged up the dust mites could not withstand the power.

``This is quite a portable product that is chemical free and safe for children and pets,'' Mr Obeyesekera said.

``They can be even used over your pillow, bedspread or mattress as those are the areas they tend to hide in.''

With the dust mite eliminator the first cab off the rank to have a run in the market, the innovative engineer already has four product ideas in place to follow.

``I released the product nearly a month ago and I have already sold 40 online,'' Mr Obeyesekera said.

``There will definitely be room to alter it in the future, but for now I want to see how this runs before the next one comes out at the end of the year.''
