THEY may be the kings of keeping things cold, but The Hills Shire Council's Fridge Buyback scheme is hotting up.
Mid-April to mid-May was the most successful time for the scheme.
The Hills Shire Council collected 87 fridges in those five weeks.
As a result of the success, the scheme will be extended to residents in rural parts of the shire.
Mayor Peter Dimbrowsky said residents in remote parts of the shire interested in saving money while helping the environment should join in by getting rid of their old, no-longer-required fridges.
``The Fridge Buyback Program is a residential energy recycling and greenhouse reduction program that collects working second fridges from homes across Sydney,'' Cr Dimbrowsky said.
``The program will carry out a special collection run from rural areas if enough residents express interest in having their old fridges collected.''
People who live in Glenorie, Middle Dural, Kenthurst, Annangrove, Nelson, Box Hill or Maraylya can register to have their fridges collected.
Cr Dimbrowsky said he regretted that the council would not be able to pick up fridges from Sackville North, South Maroota or Maroota, but that they were too far away.
All residents with a fridge 10 years or older and larger than 250 litres can take part in the program.
As well as free collection, residents may also be eligible to receive a $35 rebate if six steps or fewer are involved in the removal of their fridge.
The program is supported by the NSW Government's Climate Change Fund, and all fridges will be degassed and recycled.
