Scuba-diving lesson ends in tragedy

12 Dec, 2007 08:06 AM
POLICE were called to the Macdonald River on Tuesday afternoon when a woman, who was being taught to scuba dive by a friend, failed to surface.

Hanna Schmahl, 62, went missing in the Macdonald River between 2pm and 2.30pm on Tuesday while scuba diving in what have been described as murky conditions seven kilometres up the river from Wisemans Ferry. A police spokesman said emergency services were called but failed to find Mrs Schmahl.

Police divers searched the riverbed on Wednesday morning. At 9.40am, divers found Mrs Schmahl's scuba equipment and an hour later, her body.

Mrs Schmahl was from Beacon Hill on the North Shore but spent much of her time in the Wisemans Ferry area.

Next-of-kin have been informed.

A report has been prepared for the coroner and a post-mortem will be done. The scuba equipment will be examined by the police diving section while Windsor detectives conduct further enquiries.
