STANHOPE Gardens' Dennis Johnson Library recently celebrated its first birthday.
The library is named after the late Dennis Johnson, who served as Blacktown's town clerk from 1984 to 1993 then became the city's first general manager from 1993 until his death in 1996.
It holds more than 30,000 books, DVDs, magazines, picture books and graphic novels.
There are also study spaces and meeting rooms, which allow the library to host lectures, seminars and social/cultural events as well as Baby Rhyme Time and Story Time sessions.
Librarian Joy Bourke said the library, which adjoins the Stanhope Gardens Leisure Centre, had become a meeting place for the community.
``One of the more important things is that libraries are more of a social space now and that's one of the things we've concentrated on at Dennis Johnson,'' she said.
But it continues to fulfil its main purpose as a haven for book lovers.
``We are getting a high turnover of borrowing and we're also getting a lot of people using computers.
``People will do everything they can first on the computer. They'll go Google, then they always come back to books.''
