THE Ponds eastern playing fields precinct is now open.
The $8.5 million sport and recreational facility includes two high-quality playing fields, four multipurpose courts, four netball courts and a playground.
A fitness trail, two ponds, training-standard lighting and a car park with 165 spaces are also part of the precinct.
Blacktown mayor Alan Pendleton opened the precinct last Tuesday.
He said the project was another example of the council and Landcom working together to deliver first-class facilities for new and existing communities.
"This facility provides healthy, active recreation opportunities for many people," Cr Pendleton said.
"Council looks forward to providing additional facilities such as this in the future as our great city continues to grow over the coming years."
Kerry Robinson, the general manager of development for Landcom, said the facility had attracted strong support from the community and sports groups in the north-west.
"Landcom spent many months working with council to ensure the design of the facility best meets the needs of the local community," Mr Robinson said.
More than 2500 residents are now living at The Ponds.
John Palmer Public School will hold school sports at the fields next year.
The circular playing field area can be used for winter and summer sports and community events.
Multipurpose tennis and netball courts can also be used for basketball, futsal and other court-based sports.
Shade structures, fitness equipment, bike racks, and barbecues are included near the adventure-themed playground.
