PARENTS will be able to claim half the cost of their children's school uniforms, thanks to an expansion of the federal government's Education Tax Refund scheme.
The scheme, which enables families to claim up to $779 of school expenses per child each year, has been expanded to include uniforms.
Greenway federal Labor candidate Michelle Rowland welcomed Prime Minister Julia Gillard's announcement last week.
Ms Rowland said many families
in north-west Sydney who were struggling to cope with high living costs would find the ability to claim for the costs of uniforms a huge help to reduce the cost of sending their children to school.
``Uniforms can be an expensive part of sending kids to school, but this announcement, along with the existing refund for textbooks, computers and trade tools for high school trade courses, will help families with these costs,'' she said.
Parents will be able to claim up to 50 per cent of the cost of uniforms as well as the existing education expenses included in the scheme.
(Up to $390 per child each year for primary school students and $779 per child each year for secondary school students.)
