Vital steps toward change

11 Nov, 2008 03:00 AM
AT 22, Erland Howland is helping co-host Australia's biggest day of community action on climate change.

The Glenorie resident is the climate campaigner at the Nature Conservation Council of NSW, which is co-hosting the Walk Against Warming on Sunday.

``Last year over 100,000 people participated in walks demanding real change,'' Mr Howland said.

``People want solutions. They recognise the scale of this climate crisis is so huge that we have to do something about it.''

The walks are usually held close to the International Day of Action on Climate Change, which this year is December 6 .

``We want to put pressure on at a time when the Federal Government is preparing to set Australia's emission target for 2020,'' Mr Howland said. ``If government and business were doing the right thing, we wouldn't need to have the walk.''

Part of Mr Howland's job is to help to establish community groups against global warming.

There will be a meeting in Stockland Mall community room this evening (November 11) for a screening of `The Carbon Connection.'

The walk is from Martin Place to Hyde Park at 11am on November 15. Information: www.climatemovement.org.au.
