PARKLEA Soccer Club got off to a good start in the Champions of Champions knockout tournament with a tight 1-0 win away win to the Dubbo Bulls.
The five-hour journey was well worth it for the Parklea players as they held their nerve to snatch a dramatic victory in the closing stages of the match.
Blacktown Soccer Association's golden-boot contender Jake Wicks popped up in the 88th minute to break the deadlock when he prodded in a goal from a looping corner kick.
Team manager Michelle Kerrigan said she was proud of her team's achievement, considering that they were down to only two substitutes and facing a hostile crowd.
"The boys were getting heckled a bit by the Dubbo home supporters," Kerrigan said. "We sung our team song so loudly at the end I think all of Dubbo knew we had won."
The game was largely a cagey battle with neither team able to convert any of their early chances.
Kerrigan said Parklea did not take their chances and were lucky to score before the game went into extra-time.
She said the goalkeepers of both teams performed brilliantly.
Parklea will play either Bankstown or Eastern Suburbs on Sunday.
