Goal gets the Aussies home

HILLS star Kyah Simon is certainly a hero for those that know her and those that don't.

Simon, 18 who was a former Pacific Hills Christian School student helped the Aussie women's soccer team, the Matildas claim their biggest victory so far winning the Asian Cup in China.

She had the most important role of all scoring the winning penalty goal.

The team won after a penalty shoot-out victory over North Korea (5-4 on penalties) in the final.

Simon revealed she had little opportunity to practice spot kicks in the lead-up to the final.

``The one practice session that we had, I actually rolled my ankle so I sat out that and I can't even remember the last time I kicked a penalty,'' she said.

Simon came into the match just after the Koreans equalised the score at 1-all.

``I just had to give it all I've got and I know the girls had worked so hard and gave it such a gutsy effort, you know, throughout that hundred minutes. So I just had to come on and make that difference and give it all I've got and whatever happens, happens.''

And that she did, despite being ``all nerves''.

``I didn't show it all that much, but I just had to be as confident as I could and believe in yourself and be willing for that ball to hit the back of the net,'' she said. ``It was just an amazing feeling to come away with that bit of silverware.''

For now, it's more celebrating the historic win, but the next big goal isn't too far away the 2011 World Cup in Germany.

``It's going to be a great tournament I think. The team is already gelling well as it is and we've still got sort of a year ahead of us and it's just going to be great to mingle with the best teams in the world and to see how we really go against them,'' she said.

``We've won the Asian Cup now and to go in with something under our belts will be a big confidence booster for all the girls.''

They are hoping to improve on their 2007 quarter-final effort.

Simon has certainly come a long way since playing with the boys at Quakers Hill Soccer Club at eight. She's represented Australia at the 2007 Youth Olympics and the 2007 Youth World Cup.
