A ROUSE Hill Renegades Union first grade team built on last-minute selections was still too strong for Macquarie University in the Jeffrey Cup on Saturday, under the threat of bad weather at Riverstone High School Oval.
The students seemed to be a threat too early in the game, but costly errors close to the line kept them scoreless, while at the other end, the Renegades, with Gene Peterson back at his usual position of flyhalf, started to run amok.
The home side started to get the upper hand, with captain Aaron Taotofi making crucial metres over the advantage line, his pack pouring into the breach after him to free the back line's electric pace.
Soon the Renegades had two more tries, and the students started to wane under pressure at ruck time. Inaccurate kicking alone enabled the visitors to stay within 10 points at half-time.
The Renegades powered on to finish the job with the score at 39-14 to the Renegades, to keep them at the top of the table.
Second grade won 45-21 against Macquarie University.
