NEWS just keeps getting better for Paralympic swimmer Andrew Pasterfield, 20.
A member of Castle Hill RSL Dolphins, he has just been selected to represent Australia in this year's Commonwealth Games and in the 2010 Swimming World Championships.
First on the agenda are these championships, which will be held in the Netherlands in August.
Pasterfield, who has mild cerebral palsy, said that he was delighted to qualify.
``I swam 24.78 seconds in the 50 metres freestyle, 1:02.33 seconds in the 100 metres backstroke and 54.92 seconds in the 100 metres freestyle,'' he said.
Pasterfield, who swims in the multi-disability events, secured his spot in the Commonwealth Games on Sunday at Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre after the trials.
``They were taking only the top three who made the qualifying times,'' he said.
``I wasn't expecting to make it but I was always hopeful.
``I swam really well and after my races I had a fair idea I should make it.
``When I finally found out I was in, I was very relieved.''
Pasterfield trains under Greg Morrison. He had a top night swimming a personal best in the 100 metres freestyle the event he will be contesting at the Commonwealth Games.
``We had to swim under 55.35 seconds,'' he said.
`` I swam 54.67 seconds and it turned out I was the only one who swam under 55 seconds.''
Pasterfield, who competed in his first Paralympic Games in Beijing in 2008, said the Games were certainly a highlight in his swimming career so far.
Making the Commonwealth Games and world champs are definitely a close second.
``Both of these competitions are going to be tough but I am really looking forward to them,'' he said. ``I am not looking too far ahead in terms of expectations. I will wait and see what happens.''
