Taylah grabs national gold

29 Jun, 2010 01:00 AM
TAYLAH Pollard-Hughes, 11, is still beaming after winning two gold medals at the School Sport Australian Swimming National Championships.

The Kellyville resident represented Beaumont Hills Public School and NSW.

She was team captain at the competition, held in Brisbane on June 6-11.

Taylah won gold in the 50-metres and 100-metres breaststroke and got silver

in the 4x50m medley

relay.

She was 10th in the individual medley.

``It was my third year in the school national competition and I had never won gold before,'' Taylah said.

``I was so happy with my results.

``I couldn't believe it.

``I was shocked. I just worked really hard in the lead-up and I wanted it really badly.

``It's amazing what you can do when you really want something.''

It was certainly a big achievement for the Hills Swimming Club member, who trains up to six sessions a week.

``I thought I would at least swim a PB [personal best] but I certainly wasn't expecting the gold.

``Last year I came third in the 50-metres breaststroke, so it's really good to know that I have improved.''

Although she admitted to being ``so nervous'' on the day, the top talent still managed to come away with personal best times.

In the 50-metres breaststroke, she stopped the clock at 36.82 seconds and in the 100 metres breaststroke she finished with 1min 19.20sec.

``I was thrilled with that,'' she said.

For now, it's back to the pool for training.

``I want to keep on improving and just do my best.''

Hills Swimming Club members Josh Skinner and Rebekah Sefton also did well.

Josh was fifth in the 50m, 100 and 200m backstroke. Rebekah was fourth in the 50m freestyle, first in the medley relay, won silver in the freestyle relay and was third in the 8x50 metre freestyle relay.
