WHILE the world's best soccer players are on the international stage for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, Kellyville resident and Sydney FC star Terry McFlynn will be preparing for his own international showdown.
Fresh from winning the Hyundai A-League 2010 domestic double, McFlynn and his Sydney FC teammates will test their soccer skills against some of Europe's biggest clubs when they take part in the Festival of Football International Club Tournament in July.
It's at Sydney Football Stadium where the Sky Blues will face the Blackburn Rovers (English Premier League), Glasgow Rangers (Scottish Premier League champions) and Greek team AEK Athens FC (11 times Greek champions) in a round-robin tournament.
McFlynn said the event shows how much the sport and the A-League has grown.
``That's proven by the fact we can bring in the Scottish champions and Blackburn Rovers one of only four teams to ever win the English Premier League,'' McFlynn said.
``Then there's AEK Athens, the 11-time Greek champions.
``I mean, these are fantastic football clubs in Europe and I think it shows how far not only Sydney FC but football in Australia has come, that we can bring these teams here.''
He's certainly looking forward to it, as are the rest of the team.
``I think it's a great indicator to us players to see where we're at.
``We can put ourselves against the top European players to see where we sit.''
With the World Cup in action, fans will certainly be riding the football wave.
``I'd urge all the members and fans to come out and support us against some of the biggest clubs in Europe. It's not every day you get to see these sort of players on your doorstep. It's important for the fans to come out and support this tournament so we can keep it going.''
