SALLY Cash of Castle Hill is one of 14 top talents who will represent Australia's handball team at the Youth Olympics next month.
The year 11 Hills Grammar student will be joined by classmate Brianne Keyes of Kellyville, former Hills Grammar student Taylee Lewis and West Pennant Hills resident and Pennant Hills High student Annalese Smith.
``I am so happy to be in the team,'' Sally, 17, said.
``I was definitely very relieved and excited when I found out.''
The girls were selected based on their performance at the junior national championships recently at Sydney Olympic Park. ``All the girls were trying as hard as they could because we all really wanted to make it. I think we were all a little bit nervous.''
The Youth Olympic selection is certainly a highlight for Sally.
``I did go to New Caledonia [along with Annalese] last year with the Under 17 Australian team, but this is definitely very exciting. I can't wait.''
NSW goalkeeper Taylee Lewis, a former junior world championship representative who has also been capped at senior level, was excited to be wearing the green and gold again in Singapore.
``It is a great honour,'' Lewis said. ``It's something I've worked hard for so I am really happy.
``Playing at an international level and outside of a world championship will be great.
``To be part of something that is this big will be such a good experience.
``You need to have experience before you play in something as big as the Olympics and these Games are the perfect platform.''
The girls are not expecting an easy ride. They know it's going to be tough.
``We really hope to do well,'' Sally said.
``We know it's going to be very hard competing against the best in the world, and we are training hard and will just go in there with our eyes open.''
Australia starts the tournament against Denmark on August 20 at Singapore's International Convention Centre.
The Youth Olympic Games are from August 14 to 26.
